Module 2: Natures Cycles, Becoming carbon neutral

Module 2

About this experience

This module looks at how nature is the ultimate recycler. Water from the Waihukahuka spring creek which runs through the Trout Centre is used for our aquarium, trout breeding programme and kids fishing pond. When it enters the centre, the water is very pure and clean. But after it has been through our fish rearing areas and aquarium where there is a high concentration of fish, it becomes quite polluted. When this water is cycled through a hydroponic (or more correctly, aquaponic) unit it provides enough nutrients to allow a large vegetable unit to flourish. Once it has been through the aquaponics set up, the water is filtered and is so clean it can be feed back into the system.
